| About Medical Products and Procedures
The Food and Drug Administration issues warnings about possible adverse effects that can arise from questionable medical products, devices, and procedures. The agency describes how wide-ranging this category of its responsibility can be: “Medical devices range from simple tongue depressors and bedpans to complex programmable pacemakers with micro-chip technology and laser surgical devices. In addition, medical devices include in vitro diagnostic products, such as general purpose lab equipment, reagents, and test kits, which may include monoclonal antibody technology. Certain electronic radiation emitting products with medical application and claims meet the definition of medical device. Examples include diagnostic ultrasound products, x-ray machines and medical lasers.” Source: Food and Drug Administration |
Technology used in the medical field can be a tremendous help to doctors when it comes to diagnosing and treating various health conditions. But there are times when the tests that physicians use may cause problems for unsuspecting patients. One such diagnostic test that has created controversy is the MRI, or magnetic resonance image. The test uses a computer and magnetic fields to create cross-sectional views of the body, giving doctors a non-invasive means of examining both soft tissue and bones. In some cases, though, the procedure has left patients injured. If you suspect that an MRI or other diagnostic test has harmed you or someone you love, contact a personal injury lawyer for an evaluation of your situation.

MRIs, CT scans, x-rays and other tests are used to diagnose a wide range of ailments and injuries, ranging from musculoskeletal problems to organ damage or malfunctions. Problems have arisen with MRIs and a related test called an MRA, or magnetic resonance angiography, because a chemical – gadolinium – is used in contrast injected into patients during the tests. The gadolinium is injected in order to give doctors higher-contrast images of scanned tissue. This can help physicians more readily diagnose abnormalities.
However, the Food and Drug Administration reports problems with contrast agents that contain gadolinium, and requires manufacturers to include warnings on the products’ packaging. The FDA issued its mandate after noting that individuals with kidney problems who are injected with contrast agents containing gadolinium developed a condition called NSF/NFD, or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis/nephrogenicfibrosingdermopathy. The conditions can cause debilitating effects characterized by skin thickening and problems with the connective tissues in the lungs, legs and abdomen. In worst cases, they can lead to disability or death. FDA research indicates that side effects of gadolinium may be experienced after only one injection.
If you’ve had to undergo an MRI or MRA and suspect you have experienced gadolinium-related side effects after a contrast injection, the Colorado personal injury attorneys at the Law Firm of Jeremy Rosenthal can help you understand your legal rights and whether you might have a claim for injury.
